Aspen,Colorado https://www.nickselway.com/photo/crystal-mill-covered-in-snow-fall-colors/ https://www.nickselway.com/images/xl/_DSC8084-Edit-copy.jpg Seasons Greetings An Iconic place to photograph during the Fall Color season in Colorado is The Crystal Mill.I have photographed this mill many times over the years but my dream was to always capture it with Fall colors and fresh snowfall.At the beginning of Oct 2023 I checked the weather forecast and it showed that a huge winter storm was going to happen and made my way up to this area.My only hesitation about not wanting to drive out to the mill was the dangerous 4 mile mountain road that leads to it.Its dangerous enough with no snow let alone 5 inches of fresh snow on the rd.I took the chance on the morning of Oct 12th and slowly made the drive out and when I cam upon the scene I was blown away at the beauty of the 2 seasons meeting. Crystal Mill or the Old Mill is an 1892 wooden powerhouse located on an outcrop above the Crystal River in Crystal, Colorado. It is accessible from Marble, Colorado via 4x4. Although called a Watermill, it is more correctly denoted as a compressor station, which used a water turbine to drive an air compressor, and was originally built with a horizontal wheel. The compressed air was then used to power other machinery or tools. McClure Pass is a 8,770 foot high mountain pass that is traversed along the West Elk Loop Scenic Byway in western Colorado. It resides between the towns of Redstone and Somerset, nearby Carbondale and Paonia, respectively. With panoramic views of some of the state's most dramatic wilderness areas, McClure Pass is a great place to stop and camp or explore along State Highway 133.The Ute Indians are among the first known humans to use McClure Pass while inhabiting the Crystal and Muddy Valleys. In 1776 Spanish settlers began exploring the area, which would be later settled by miners, farmers and ranchers. In November 2023 I finally was able to get a permit to hike here.After 4 days of photographing I came away with this image showing the red rock canyons, lush green forest and aqua blue water that reminded me of Hawaii it was truly paradise in the middle of the desert. A fun fact about Havasupai Falls is that calcium carbonate and magnesium occur naturally in the waters that feed Havasupai Falls,Mooney Falls & Beaver Falls. The waters get their blue color from the magnesium. As the pools deepen, the calcium carbonate is slowly released from the water, creating blue water that becomes more brilliant as the relative magnesium content increases. I scouted this Beach "One Ali'i Park" during the day and on my last night I came here for sunset as I watched these palm trees blow in the wind and the sky light up over the island of Lani in the distance. In the Hawaiian language, oneali'i means "royal sands." The beach park is named after an ancient Hawaiian fishpond. Two stone monuments in the park mark the 75th and 100th anniversaries of Japanese immigration to Hawaii. The pool is a sinkhole surrounded by igneous rock. It is located on the north shore of KauaÊ»i in the town of Princeville, Small fish and tiny sea life also live in the tide pool, such as HawaiÊ»ian sea urchins, angelfish and the so-called "ghost fish".Only after the original site on the Big Island of HawaiÊ»i was destroyed did the location on Kauai become better known as "Queen's Bath". This tide pool was used for what it sounds like; it was a royal bathing place. It was also used as a place of relaxation when an AliÊ»i needed to "wash off the stress". The original "Queen's Bath" was located in Kalapana on the Big Island of HawaiÊ»i. It was formed after a lavatube collapsed and filled with fresh water supplied by natural springs. In ancient times only the AliÊ»i (Royalty) were permitted entry to the sacred waters. In 1983 Kilauea erupted and in 1987 the original site was destroyed by lava flow.Only after the original site on the Big Island of HawaiÊ»i was destroyed did the location on Kauai become better known as "Queen's Bath". I have shot here many times over the years and can definitely say this is my favorite shot of this location to date. Mākua Beach, also called Tunnels Beach for its caves and winter waves, is one of the most gorgeous beaches in all Hawai'i. Situated at the eastern end of the Nā Pali Coast, Mākua's turquoise water, verdant cliffs and spectacular white sand beach was the film site for South Pacific.Originally an ancient Hawaiian settlement, Mākua was inhabited from roughly 1000 A.D. until the 1800s. A large, protected archaeological complex remains a short distance away at Ha'ena Beach Park, which includes house sites, burials, and storage pits. According to oral histories as few as 4,000 or as many as 10,000 people lived in Waipi'o during the times before the arrival of Captain Cook in 1778; Waipi'o was the most fertile and productive valley on the Big Island of Hawaii.It was at Waipio in 1780 that Kamehameha the Great received his war god Kukailimoku who proclaimed him the future ruler of the islands. It was off the coast of Waimanu, near Waipio, that Kamehameha engaged Kahekili, the Lord of the leeward islands, and his half-brother, Kaeokulani of Kaua'i, in the first naval battle in Hawaiian history—Kepuwahaulaula, known as the Battle of the Red-Mouthed Guns. Kamehameha thus began his conquest of the islands.In the late 1800s, many Chinese immigrants settled in the valley. At one time the valley had churches, restaurants, and schools as well as a hotel, post office, and jail. But in 1946, the most devastating tsunami in Hawaii's history swept great waves far back into the valley. Afterward, most people left the valley, and it has been sparsely populated ever since.A severe deluge in 1979 covered the valley from side to side in four feet of water. Today only about 50 people live in the Waipio Valley. These are taro farmers, fishermen, and others who are reluctant to leave their simple lifestyle. As I continued through the park I couldn't believe my eyes as I saw this Bison 15 yards from the road covered from head to toe in snow. This famous valley in Navajo Country, was introduced to Americans as a backdrop for many of Hollywood's western movies and countless television commercials.The Mittens, as well as other valley buttes and mesas, rise up hundreds of feet from the valley floor near border of Utah and Arizona. Sometimes these red rock features are referred to as timeless and enduring. A recorded geological event at the Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park reminds us that these monuments are finite and cannot escape the forces of gravity and erosion. On May 18, 2006 a huge slab on the East Mitten butte came loose and made a thunderous roar as it tumbled down the talus slope. A dust cloud welled up and enveloped the magnificent butte, shocking those visitors that looked on. A shed roof was constructed at the far end of the pier in the 1940s.The pier has been a gathering place for the citizens of Hanalei since it was abandoned for shipping in 1933.The pier was heavily damaged in 1992 as a result of Hurricane Iniki. In 2012-2013, the canopy at the end of the pier was restored. The Hanalei Rotary Club raised over $170,000 to restore the neglected canopy in a program coined "Save the Pier. Within a few minutes of me watching him do this he accidentally broke an edge on one of the molds and immediately tossed it into the lava I happen to walk over to it looked down and captured this one of kind shot. The active lava flowed around the broken mold making it look like hair around the face hence the image name "Face of Pele". Knowing the lupine flowers bloom in June that afternoon I drove out just north of Silverthorne hiking the hillsides looking for a field of lupines. To my luck I found this beautiful field but the flowers were covered in 2 inches of snow and the mountains were blocked by the clouds. So I checked the weather for the next morning and came back at 5am for sunrise. Knowing the lupine flowers bloom in June, that afternoon I drove out just north of Silverthorne, hiking the hillsides looking for a field of lupines. To my luck, I found this beautiful field but the flowers were covered in two inches of snow and the mountains were blocked by the clouds. So I checked the weather for the next morning and came back at 5 am for sunrise. As the sun came up, it touched the tips of the mountains. Although a classic view the conditions with having fresh snow and fog in the canyon made this a special morning to photograph. The word "hoodoo" means to bewitch, which is what Bryce Canyon's rock formations surely do. The hoodoos we are talking about are tall skinny shafts of rock that protrude from the bottom of arid basins. The day before this, I scouted this location by hiking high up on a ridge-line, finding the most brilliant aspen grove I have ever seen.
