What 20 Years of Selling Fine Art Photography has taught Me
After more than 20 years as a professional landscape and ocean photographer, I've learned that fine art photography is about much more than capturing beautiful images. It's about creating an emotional connection that lasts a lifetime.
Through my photography galleries in Hawaii and Breckenridge, Colorado, I've had the privilege of meeting collectors from around the world, hearing their stories, and helping them discover artwork that brings meaning and inspiration into their homes.
Along the way, I've learned a few valuable lessons about what makes people truly connect with a photograph and why certain images stay with us forever.

1. People Buy Art Because of How It Makes Them Feel
One of the biggest lessons I've learned is that people rarely fall in love with a photograph simply because of its colors or composition. Often, there's a personal connection.A photograph of Hawaii might remind someone of their honeymoon, while a Colorado mountain landscape brings back memories of family vacations or a favorite place.
The most meaningful artwork tells a story that connects with the person viewing it.That's something I've witnessed countless times throughout my career.

2. Bigger Artwork Can Make a Bigger Impression
Over the years, I've seen how dramatically a large fine art photograph can transform a room. While smaller prints are beautiful, oversized landscape and ocean photographs create an entirely different experience.A breathtaking mountain panorama or powerful ocean wave displayed at 40" × 60" or even 60" × 120" can become the centerpiece of an entire home.I've learned that choosing the right size is just as important as choosing the right photograph.

3. Quality Matters More Than People Realize
Not all photographic prints are created equal.Over the years, I've worked with different printing materials and techniques, learning how important craftsmanship is to the finished artwork.
From the incredible clarity of my Limited Edition True Life Acrylics to the vibrant appearance of Metal Prints and the timeless elegance of Italian Roma framing, the presentation can dramatically influence how a photograph looks on the wall. When someone invests in fine art, they deserve exceptional quality that they can enjoy for years to come.

4. The Best Artwork Is the Piece You Never Get Tired of Looking At
Perhaps the most important lesson I've learned is that the best photograph isn't necessarily the one everyone else loves. It's the one that speaks to you. I've seen customers walk into a gallery and immediately connect with a particular image. Sometimes it's a dramatic ocean wave, other times a peaceful mountain landscape or a quiet moment in nature. That's the beauty of fine art. Everyone sees and experiences it differently. My advice has always been simple: choose artwork you genuinely love, something that makes you feel something every time you walk into the room.

“Liquid Thunder” remains one of my favorite images I've ever captured.
While photographing Oahu’s North Shore at sunset, I sent my drone above massive 25–30-foot waves to capture their incredible power and beauty from a unique perspective.
