Face Of Pele
Kalapana,Big Island of Hawaii
On this morning I walked past a gentleman who was filling up a cast iron mold with the fresh lava flowing on the ground to make lava face molds. Within a few minutes of me watching him do this he accidentally broke an edge on one of the molds and immediately tossed it into the lava I happen to walk over to it looked down and captured this one of kind shot. The active lava flowed around the broken mold making it look like hair around the face hence the image name "Face of Pele". In Hawaiian religion, Pele (pronounced [ˈpɛlɛ]) is the goddess of volcanoes and fire and the creator of the Hawaiian Islands. Often referred to as "Madame Pele" or "Tūtū Pele" as a sign of respect, she is a well-known deity within Hawaiian mythology and is notable for her contemporary presence and cultural influence as an enduring figure from ancient Hawaii.Epithets of the goddess include Pele-honua-mea ("Pele of the sacred land") and Ka wahine ʻai honua Photo © copyright by Nick Selway.
