CLIENT REVIEWS

The Big Island of Hawaii is a land of incredible contrasts, shaped by volcanoes, the ocean, and time. From ancient lava fields and dramatic coastlines to lush rainforests, cascading waterfalls, and towering mountain landscapes, it offers some of the most diverse and inspiring scenery found anywhere in the Hawaiian Islands.

After calling the Big Island home for 14 years, I've come to know not only its iconic locations but also the hidden gems, perfect light, and quieter places that most visitors never experience. I'm excited to share these special locations with you and help you create unforgettable images while exploring the magic of Hawaii's most diverse island. This workshop is intentionally limited to just five photographers, creating a truly personal and enjoyable experience. Unlike larger workshops that often feel crowded and rushed, our small group allows everyone plenty of one-on-one instruction, space to shoot, and the flexibility to slow down, be creative, and enjoy the journey. You'll never feel like you're competing for a spot or waiting your turn.

Join me for an unforgettable Big Island photography adventure as we explore breathtaking landscapes and photograph the island's incredible light, textures, and natural beauty. Throughout the workshop, I'll provide hands-on instruction in composition, camera settings, exposure, and creative techniques, along with personalized guidance tailored to your skill level. I'll also share my post-processing workflow to help you bring your images to life long after the workshop ends.

Whether you're looking to improve your photography, discover spectacular locations, or simply enjoy an incredible experience with a small group of like-minded photographers, this workshop is designed to be both inspiring and fun.

This workshop is designed for photographers with a moderate level of mobility. Some of our locations require short hikes through mountain terrain with gentle elevation gains of less than 400 feet. Depending on weather conditions and location access, we may hike up to 1.5 miles round trip on certain days.

These hikes lead us to some of the most spectacular and remote viewpoints, giving you the opportunity to capture breathtaking landscapes away from the crowds.

To ensure you're comfortable throughout the workshop, we recommend bringing:

  • Hiking boots or sturdy trail shoes
  • A small camera backpack
  • Plenty of water
  • Snacks for the day

Recommended Camera Gear

Bring the gear you're most comfortable using. Whether you shoot with a DSLR or mirrorless camera, we'll help you get the most out of your equipment.

Recommended gear includes:

  • DSLR or mirrorless camera
  • Sturdy tripod with a ball head (or equivalent)
  • Remote shutter release for long-exposure photography
  • Extra batteries
  • Extra memory (SD) cards

Recommended lenses:

  • 16–35mm
  • 24–70mm
  • 70–200mm
  • 100–400mm

These focal lengths provide excellent versatility for the wide variety of landscapes and wildlife we'll encounter throughout the workshop.

Whether you're looking to strengthen your technical skills or refine your artistic vision, this workshop offers hands-on instruction in the field covering topics such as:

  • Creating strong, compelling compositions
  • The Rule of Thirds, simplicity, and visual balance
  • Understanding exposure: shutter speed, aperture, ISO, and depth of field
  • Choosing the right lens for different scenes and lighting conditions
  • Long-exposure photography techniques
  • Using ND filters effectively

Post-Processing Session

Your learning doesn't end when the workshop does.

Within the weeks following the workshop, each participant will receive a complimentary one-on-one, 2-hour post-processing session. During this personalized online session, you'll select 3–4 of your favorite images from the trip, and we'll walk through our complete editing workflow in Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop.

Our goal is to help you transform your raw captures into finished images while giving you editing techniques you can continue using long after the workshop is over.
